Antioxidants and their benefits during pregnancy
In a recent study larevistabritanica “British Medical Journal,” the researchers found that supplementation with L- arginine and antioxidants help to reduce the risk of preeclampsia.
The study involved a group of women at high risk of preeclampsia. When participants were about 20 weeks of pregnancy.
The researchers divided them into three groups: 228 received food bars fortified with vitamins and antioxidants L-arginine, 222 were fortified with vitamins only, and 222 were assigned to placebo bars containing no L-arginine or vitamins.
At study end, 12.7 percent of women cuyasdietasfueron supplemented with L-arginine and antioxidants had developed preeclampsia (compared with 22.5% of women in the vitamin group only 30.2% of women in the placebo group).
Previous studies suggest that preeclampsia may be linked to low levels of L-arginine, an amino acid that helps maintain healthy circulation during pregnancy. In addition, some research suggests that women with higher levels deantioxidantescomo beta-carotene and lutein may be less likely to develop pre-eclampisa.
